Pub hopping in Utrecht

The university city of Utrecht is strewn with hundreds of pubs and restaurants. Here is a quick glimpse of a few.

Kloek is located very near the Utrecht Central Station, serving a variety of beer from Dutch breweries, and chicken. Simple. Beer and chicken. Perfect for sitting outside and watching the world go by.

Cafe de Stad is a quiet pub located well inside the inner city, they play terrific music, with indoor and outdoor seating.

Mid-June, it's past 10 p.m. Long days, indeed!

Jenever, the Dutch variant of Gin, is also available, best sipped neat.

Perhaps the quaintest of them all, Cafe Derat is an old, superbly maintained pub, with local folks making up most of the clientele, and an occasional tourist.

It's lovely being there, isn't it?

Well, it's time to head home, got a morning flight to catch!

Delphi's in Neude is abuzz with students. Outdoor seating is superb for summer evenings.

't Oude Pothuys is set in an underground cave like atmosphere by the Old Canal (Oude Gracht). One of the few pubs that feature live music.

Cafe Tilt! right next door to Cafe de Stad also features live music, though not very often.

De Poort is a lively pub located on the Old Canal, offering a large choice of beer.

Kafe Belgie, among the most well known, serving several hundred varieties of Belgian beer.

Mej Janssen is a restaurant next to a canal, and they have an indoor section too. It used to be a warehouse for storing goods that the boats brought in. Many, many such warehouses have been converted to fashionable restaurants all along the canals in Utrecht.

Perhaps the most iconic of all, Cafe Olivier, used to be a Church, now turned into one of the most well known pubs in Utrecht.

Cheese and meat platter.

The house cat takes a nap!

Cafe van Velsen, the most high energy pub that I came across in Utrecht. The manager danced away and told me, I want to hear you sing and dance! Superb atmosphere, friendly staff and customers, feet stomping music.

Finger food is served in most pubs, as also in Cafe van Velsen.

And a variety of Belgian beer.

Now for a little food around Utrecht...

While in the Netherlands, I had to try the Raw Herring, a Dutch delicacy that was served in the office cafeteria one afternoon. Very tasty, indeed!

Surinamese meal in Utrecht, at Moksi and Tandoori.

Cafe Ten Beste, a simple Turkish cafe, open all night, perfect for a late evening or early morning snack.

Cafe Shalom near Cafe de Stad and Cafe Tilt!, good for a quick meal.

Ana's Cuisine serves reasonably good Turkish food.

A little of Rotterdam...

Finally, the famous Kapsalon sampled in Rotterdam, where Kapsalon was invented. Extremely heavy, lots of cheese, meat and fries.

For the record, this is what one of the Dutch Jenever bottles looks like, made of earthenware.

The Neude area in Utrecht, home to many, many pubs and restaurants.

The Thinking Rabbit "Thinker on a Rock" seems to have a lot of thinking to do!

Thank you for joining me for a quick trip around Utrecht.
